CYCLISTS are being reminded that using the pavement is a criminal offence after a pensioner was almost knocked over in Cranleigh Gardens.
Cycling on the pavement (that’s a footway not a footpath) is an offence under Section 72 of the Highways Act 1835, amended in 1888.
Sgt Gary Young, of Bridgwater Police, said: “We recently received a complaint from an elderly man who was almost knocked off the pavement in Cranleigh Gardens.
“We have a lot of cyclists in town and I would remind people that it is illegal to cycle on the pavements, which some people might genuinely not be aware of.
“In most cases, police will issue a fixed penalty notice (on-the-spot fine) of £50. If this is not paid within 28 days it will increase by 50%.
“Individuals can also be reported for summons for the offence which could mean a court appearance.”
