GROUPS of Year 10 pupils at Robert Blake Science College and Elmwood Special School have started a special life skills course run by Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

The 12-week Firebreak initiative is aimed at pupils whose needs are not entirely catered for in the classroom and runs one day a week for the entire term in a fire service environment.

The course provides a varied range of activities designed to promote and improve confidence, teamwork, citizenship and self-esteem.

Eight students will use pumps, hose and ladders, build dams and perform simulated rescues, gain life saving awards and most importantly work together as a team.

As with real firefighters, only the highest standards are acceptable and the students will report for parade in uniform at their local fire station at 9am for the entire term.

The course will conclude with a passing out parade attended by senior fire officers, local dignitaries, family and friends in March.
