VOLUNTEERS at Bridgwater's Foodbank have thanked the town's Asda store for letting them collect food there.

The collection achieved a third of a metric tonne of food in one day to help the Foodbank provide assistance to Bridgwater people that are in temporary crisis.

Ted Stock, a spokesman for the charity, said: “Even though we are concerned for the future because we do not have a permanent home, we are going ahead with all guns blazing to help those in need in our town”.

The Foodbank has a temporary base at the Mount Street Day Centre (near the cinema) and helps around 120 people a month -, a quarter of them being children - to manage their difficulties in feeding themselves and/or their dependants.

The foodbank has also given aid to some flood victims referred to them.

Mr Stock added: "No child should be hungry and no parent should need to commit crime to feed that child.

"Our records prove that, since we opened in April 2013 we have aided over a thousand local adults and over 500 local children.

"It is a shame that we exist but we do exist because there is a need for us”.

Because of the harsh winter, the foodbank needs more stock to continue its work. Volunteers will be collecting in Morrisons store, Bridgwater, on Thursday, March 13, between 10am and 4pm.

Donate on the day or drop donations of non-perishable food into Morrisons, ASDA and Sainsburys.
