A TACTICAL command group made up of the emergency services, local authorities and health organisations has been set up in response to flooding on the Levels.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service says the main areas affected by the floods are: Muchelney, Thorney, Oath, Northmoor, Moorland and Curry Moor.

The Service is also helping to support the village of Muchelney, near Langport, through the crewing of a humanitarian transport boat, provided by Somerset County Council.

A fire service spokesman said: “Fire service crews have been deployed in four wheel drive vehicles and rescue boats, while also risk assessing and mapping access routes across the areas and hamlets affected by floodwater.

“Working with the Environment Agency, local authorities and utility companies, this work has resulted in a detailed picture in terms of access to affected communities and their urgent needs.”

Sedgemoor District Council declared a 'Major Incident' for the flooded levels, prompting the command group to be set up.
