Bridgwater Costa barista wins international prize
A MEMBER of Bridgwater’s Costa Coffee team has been awarded third prize in an international competition.
Barista Tatum Clews, 22, competed with seven of Costa’s most accomplished baristas around the world to be named runner up at the Champion of Champions final held in London.
She scooped a Barista of the Year trophy and an i-Pad Mini as her runner up prize.
The eight finalists were tested on their ability to produce a technically perfect cup of handmade coffee, and their knowledge and understanding of the industry.
Tatum impressed the judges with her creation, a flavoured espresso based on the concept of a tequila shot, named the ‘The Tayste’.
She said: “I’m absolutely over the moon! To come third in the Champion of Champions event is just a dream come true.
“I’m extremely proud - especially as coming third means I’m officially the best female barista in the world!”
Head judge and Costa Master of Coffee Gennaro Pelliccia said: “Tatum did a fantastic job against some outstanding competition.
More than 3,000 baristas applied for the competition from 29 different countries. First prize went to Tony Huang from China, while Szilard Hathazi from the Isle of Man won second prize.
