Council warns business rate payers not to use private agents
BUSINESS are being urged to contact Sedgemoor District Council after it was revealed some traders were signing up to private agents.
The council said several “distressed” business ratepayers had contacted them after agreeing to sign up to an agent who said they would help the business appeal the rateable value for their premises with the Valuation Office.
A spokesman for SDC said: “Agent agreements generally claim to be a ‘no win – no fee basis’, but the ratepayer agrees to pay the agent up to 50% of any saving in business rates achieved.
“These ratepayers could be tied in to paying the agents 50% of any business rates to 31/03/17 when the next national revaluation will be completed.”
Ratepayers are urged to call the Revenues Team at SDC via 0845 408 2540/01278-435435 (8-6pm Monday to Friday) or email email@example.com.
