Careers fair is a hit with Sedgemoor students
THOUSANDS of students flocked to Junction 24, Bridgwater, to attend the inaugural running of the Somerset Careers Fair.
It was the first ambitious event of its kind, organised and funded by the Taunton-based One Step Foundation.
Organisers have described the fair, which saw 80 exhibitors pack into the popular venue, as “a remarkable success” and hope it has set the scene for more to come.
Students, including those from Robert Blake Science College, had the change to chart to some highly regarded blue chip companies, armed forces services, training organisations and the very best of the universities and colleges from around the South West and further afield.
Laura Truswell, area administrator for Mencap, said: “It was really well organised, had a great layout and brilliant turn out.”
The One Step Foundation is a newly established Social Enterprise set up to assist young people start out on the long and often arduous journey into the workplace.
Sadly, due to many government funding cuts, the old ‘Careers Service in Schools’ has faded away.
Founder of the Foundation, local businessman Sean O’Brien, said: “There has been a lot of work and research undertaken to get this event off the ground and I am thrilled it has been so well received in the community by exhibitors and visitors alike.
“From the support and feedback we have received there is no question in my mind that the message we were trying to get out there has been understood and embraced wholeheartedly.”
Chris Kimmins, event organiser from the One Step Foundation added attendance was brisk throughout the day and at times heaving, with schools bringing in their students by the coach load and others attending the event with their parents and guardians.
One attendee, Tom Sealey, 14, from Shepton Mallet said: “My mates and I had been surprised at just how many cool companies there were and all had good advice to give. It has definitely helped me think more now about what I want to do when I leave school.”
