Rocketing reading rates at Chilton Trinity
AN “accelerated reader” system at Chilton Trinity School has seen a rise of nearly 50% in the number of students reading.
Library manager Stella Preece said this is the busiest she has seen the library in 16 years at the school.
Students spend break and lunchtimes reading and swapping books in the large futuristic library, alongside a 'Kindle Corner' to read online books on comfy chairs, and games of scrabble and chess.
Stella said: "I'm staggered at the increase in reading we have seen among students, it is so encouraging. The online quizzes also ensure the students understand what they are reading."
The school’s accelerated reader system includes 140,000 on-line quizzes, which test students’ understanding and vocabulary. Staff receive immediate feedback on the reading progress of each student through data, percentages and points score.
