Former Bridgwater College student's advice for current crop
A TEACHER who has been appointed the next principal of Yeovil College says his time as a student at Bridgwater College inspired him to follow a career in education.
John Evans, who lives in Wembdon, is currently vice-principal at Swindon College and will take up his new post in January.
John, aged 52, was an apprentice mechanic at the old Bridgwater College site in Broadway from 1977 to 1981 while working at Bridgwater Motor Company in Eastover.
In 1984 he took a position as a motor vehicle lecturer at Farnborough College, Hampshire, before starting a similar role with Bridgwater College in 1989.
He helped to set up the college’s thriving motor vehicle courses, and became head of the area in 1994, before leaving to become head of technology at South Devon College in 2003, eventually moving on to Swindon College in 2008 as vice principal.
John says he still has a strong affinity with Bridgwater College, which dates back to his years as a student and staff member.
He said: “I have hugely happy memories of my time there.
“The lecturers motivated me to succeed and set the aspirations that I could go as far as I wanted to.
“When I returned to the college as a lecturer, I actually ended up working alongside some of the people who taught me.”
On his appointment at Yeovil College, John said: “It just goes to show what you can achieve. When I was training to be a mechanic I never thought for a moment that I was capable of running a whole college!
“I would encourage students to aim high – the only thing that can hold them back is themselves.
“My advice to students is that when you are at school and college, aim as high as you can and make it work for you.”
