Cannington couple's dream home to feature on TV
A COUPLE who went through a year of highs and lows building their dream home will proudly show off the results of their hard work on television.
Andrew and Vicki Dodden and their five-bedroom home on the outskirts of Cannington will feature on More 4's Building the Dream next week.
The Doddens moved into their cottage at Hornhill in January 2011.
Vicki said: “We fell in love with its setting as soon as we saw it, surrounded by rolling hills and with a stream along its perimeter, it was perfect.
“At the time we had looked at all possible options to build, or renovate a property to provide us with the space and comfort we wanted as a family.
“When we found our cottage we could see the potential it had.”
Andrew runs a building business, Dodden Ltd, specialising in low energy construction and sustainable build techniques.
He and Vicki had always dreamed that one day he would be able to use his skills to make a home for them and their three children - Jasmin, eight, Madison, six, and Enzo, four.
Last May, they began work converting the cottage into an eco-home using a variety of modern materials.
They also built a large extension.
The result was a five-bedroom house that has no central heating; instead it has a log burner, solar heating and triple glazing to cut down on energy bills.
The project was followed from start to finish by TV crews from More 4.
Vicki said: “We had been to an eco exhibition and it was through that that More 4 got in touch with us.
“It's going to be interesting because we don't get to see the finished programme, but it was fun all the way through.”
Vicki said she and Andrew were extremely grateful to everybody who helped them move into their home in time for Christmas last year.
She said: “It was definitely a bit of a stressful Christmas, as the work wasn't finished then.“The house was finally completed at Easter.
“We are over the moon with it and really proud that this is our home.
“We think this kind of eco-home is the way forward. We had 20 people here for Christmas and the house is so well insulated that we had to open the windows because it was so warm.”
Building the Dream airs next Tuesday at 9pm.
