Star florist passing on wisdom to Bridgwater College's current crop
A FORMER Bridgwater College student who flourished in a prestigious national flower show is passing on her wisdom to those following in her footsteps.
Fresh from finishing third in the Interflora Florist of the Future competition, at the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show, Cheshire, Gemma Thresher is giving guidance to the college’s current crop of students.
Gemma, who works for The Orange Pip Florist, in Williton, is an ambassador to the college at events such as the Royal Bath and West Show, and Taunton Flower Show.
Speaking following her success at RHS Tatton Park, Gemma said: “Floristry competitions give me the opportunity to test my skills against other young florists, this means that I must keep up with the latest techniques and styles which hone my existing skills.
“The overall experience of the competition was exciting and it was amazing to see the diversity of skills and styles present. This continuous exposure to new skills allows me to pass on what I have learnt to my work placement students, which fascinates me as each student learns their own unique approach, keeping the subject both interesting and current.”
David Pollard, owner of The Orange Pip said: “All of us at The Orange Pip are extremely proud of Gemma, this is a real achievement and an endorsement of her incredible floral talent. We are very fortunate to have Gemma working with us here.”
Jacqui Weaver, programme manager for floristry at the college, said: “Gemma’s natural talent for floristry shone through very early during her time of study at the college. “She has continued to be an invaluable asset to the college in her work, helping and guiding new students who have followed in her wake.
“Having floristry businesses and mentors like Gemma available to current students offers them the opportunity to experience just what is possible once they have qualified themselves and inspires them to also expand their own aspirations through avenues such as competition work etc.”
