He appeared before Bristol Magistrates this morning and his case has been moved to Bristol Crown Court, where the next hearing will be on Wednesday.
A woman who says she is a friend of Mr Cox's family said he was brought up in the Burnham area, and attended Brent Knoll Primary School and St Joseph's Primary School in Burnham.
He later attended King Alfred School in Highbridge, St Augustine of Canterbury School in Taunton (now Taunton Academy) and Bridgwater College, before moving to Bristol.
The friend said everybody who knew Mr Cox was devastated by his death.
