Consultation open for Bridgwater post office move to Eastover

THE POST Office has opened a six-week consultation on plans to establish a permanent Bridgwater store in Eastover.
Post Office Ltd today announced its proposal to move from its temporary portacabin on a car park in Northgate to a new permanent branch at 27 Eastover.
Tony Jones, Post Office regional network manager, said: “We understand how important having a Post Office is to residents in Bridgwater.
“We are happy to have identified these proposed new premises, an empty retail unit at 27 Eastover, Bridgwater, TA6 5AW.
“This would retain a Post Office in a central location of the town. It is approximately 0.6 miles from its current site. “We are confident the new branch would provide a permanent solution to safeguard Post Office services.”
Under the proposed move Bridgwater Post Office would change to a new ‘main style’ branch, offering a full range of products and services.
The new store would be open an additional five hours a week, as it would open on Saturday afternoon. The opening hours would be Monday to Saturday 9am to 5.30pm.
Post Office Ltd describes the new location as a ‘modern open-plan retail environment’ and ‘superior premises’. It would have six serving positions, a mixture of screened and open plan counters and a Post Office serving point at the retail counter.
Mr Jones added: “The proposed changes to the branch are part of a three-year investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office, that will see around 6,000 branches (about half the Post Office network) converting to new-style branches.”
The public are being asked to give their comments on the plans during a six-week consultation, which closes on April 18, 2013.
Submissions can be made by Freepost ‘Your Comments’ to Post Office Ltd, via email to comments@postoffice.co.uk, via the Customer Helpline: 08457 22 33 44 or Textphone 08457 22 33 55.

Lets hope they get on with it quickly the town needs a main Post Office, and the location must be good both for the town and Eastover,
No doubt Sedgemoor will want to claim some credit as they always do.
So keep your negative Comments to yourself.
A lot of people, including myself have been asking Post Office Counter' s PLC to do the right thing!!!!!
They do not need to Consult, we are fed up to the teeth with PO Consultations. They know what Bridgwater Residents require already.
This is just another delaying exercise..
Six weeks of Jaw Jaw, will achieve nothing More.!!!!
Build and open the **** thing, do what you promised to us 5 years ago, when you closed our Main Cornhill Branch......
Why did'nt they look at Smith's Newsagents as a possible relocation, as customers buy little music in the shops now, it's the majority on line or downloads. I suggested this venue 2 years ago, I bet they never enquired as to its feasibility.

I am glad that, finally, we may have a resting place for a while for a post office, that is, of course, until another set of politicians decide that they can get away with flogging off the P.O. then we will probably loose it again, sacrificed to the alter of profit.

How petty is that?
I think Eastover is a great place for the PO to go. It is in a run down area of the town where all the old biddies can park their Rover 45s on double yellows.

I think it's about time you grew up, making statements lie this.
Just how old are you ??????
Politicians, are not as you put it queuing up to take the credit for the PO counters decision, wherever it might be.
I for one trust not PO Counters PLC/ Ltd. To deliver on their promise, if they do, I will be one of the first to thank them. We have had too many promises in the past, only to be let down by them.

Thats hilarious David, the Tories were AGAINST Monmouth and the rebellion. I think pretty much everyone supports the proposed Post Office location now and it's likely to be up by May/June. So CALM DOWN.
You were not on the Scrutiny Commitee, when we brought them before us on numerous occasions, when they first announced the Closure of the Cornhill Branch, neither were you on the Bridgwater Town Council.
So, I am not taking any advise from you!!
As I said, if and when they deliver,
wherever it is ,it will be a result..
But, it is them who must honour their commitments to the Town.

he does not understand how long this supposed consultation with the PO has been going on, I can tell you, as soon as they announced the closure of our Crown PO, on the Cornhill. Over 5 years ago, if they had wanted to provide a proper service for a Town of 50.000 residents, they would have done it long before now.
I hope they do come to the perverbial table and discuss with Sedgemoor Council, as to the Actual want to do so.

LOL blue owl only last week you said the PO should be in the high street now its your idea to put in east over make your mind up i think the term is jumping on the ban wagon ps. on a positive note this would be a great spot for the PO not far from Hooks another great store!! up UKIP
The talk in the Mercury for the last 2-3 weeks was of it possibly being at the rear of Hook's, within the Bus Depot and Asda Location.
Now it is announced as on the Corner of New Road.!!!!!!
I Honestly Do not care where they put it??!! As long as they get on find a rental unit and open it. Now ! Why does it have to have another 6 week Consultation, it is not neccessary at all.
Or is it to discuss the Colour Scheme,
Post Office Red !! Of Course.
This delaying tactic will probably result in someone else coming in and buying the Site, b4 the Consultation Process finishes, then we are back square One Again. I am not a Cynic, but a realist, I really do hope they put it some where
But Soooooooooooooooon. No More Delays. Please.

The Capitalisation of random words are of no significance, it is the way my
iPad decided to put a capital everytime it returns a word to the next line. You carry on worrying about that
, whilst the rest of us try to make PO Counters Plc / Ltd, keep to their agreements and promises, from the very first meeting we had with them over the closure, of the Main Cornhill Crown Post Office, thus a 3 Month Consultation, that resulted in them doing exactly as they had announced , so, their 6 week offer for Consultation is meaning less, and the sorry excuse replacement, they forced into the rear of the retail unit in Angel Place, without having the promised 8 Counter Places open, when busy customer usage was there, @ best most times it was three open. Then to close that and relocate to a portacabin!!!!!!! The SW Regional Manager should be replaced or sacked. For allowing this fiasco to drag on for so long, the old saying 'comes to mind, Where there 's A Will there's a Way '. PO Counters have demonstrated that they have no way. With plenty of retail units standing empty in the Main St. Of Bridgwater.
Even, as some one suggested the old cash / Rates Office in the Town Hall with its existing steps and ramps for disabled access, could have been better used for this, instead of the Carnival HQ Office. I'm sure the Carnival could have found or leased other premises, probably not at a Peppercorn rent as they have from BTC.
This was as opposed to the 11 Counter Clerks in the old PO. For say 1st Month Car Taxing & Pension Days.
Some of us are keeping the pressure on them to deliver!!!

It is a great pity that common sense didn't prevail five years ago when the purpose built post office on the cornhill, which was only built in the early sixties, was closed, very much against public opinion.
I am glad that, finally, we may have a resting place for a while for a post office, that is, of course, until another set of politicians decide that they can get away with flogging off the P.O. then we will probably loose it again, sacrificed to the alter of profit.

David, West Quay pedestrianisation was asked for by the residents who got a petition with 586 signatures. Therefore the Town Council supported it. The opponents got a petition with 126 names. Your Tory chums on District council and on County Council also supported the pedestrianisation actually. Though maybe they forgot to tell you.
By closing this West Quay inner road exit from King Square, down over Castle Street, sending the traffic left pass The Lions Club, will mean more traffic will be on the replaced traffic lights, onto the New Tesco entrance.
Of course, you Have not realised that SCC, already have said that this Junction will be at full capacity, before this additional re-routed West Quay traffic.
Still, all power to your elbow, when this happens, as you will be the First to blame it on Tesco's....just remember who initiated this Folly Decision..
A less intrusive solution would have been to impose a 20 mph traffic restrictions, make the paved area's more user friendly, and have raised crossing area's, thus allowing motorist to get to Eastover, and the Library onto
St Mary St, and onward to Taunton or around the Cornhill.......
But, hey, it's ok, as you do not drive, do you ??!!!

Eastover Retail has to attract individual shop units that stock exclusive goods that are not sold in the other Retail shops elsewhere in Bridgwater. therefore creating a niche retail experience in Eastover. That way people will want to visit Eastover to shop, ie, limit the number of Take-Aways, charity shops, phone shops, and Estate Agents outlets..
I have seen the October Consultation
Process, and one idea, that I made was to knock through if possible the middle 2 shops which are part of the flats, above which are set back from the old Sainsbury Store, thus creating a walkway through from Asda to Eastover itself.

David. I'm not sure where you get the opinion that I don't drive. I've worked as a lorry driver and minibus driver for years. The ones who initiated the west quay pedestrianisation were 1) the residents - and 2) your tory pals who came up with the 'Bridgwater vision' which included pedestrianisation of west quay. So it wasn't hard to get it passed. My opinion is that re-focussing the town centre on the riverfront is a good thing. The town was created because of the river and it's a feature we should enhance. The post office in eastover-not far from the river - using the bridge as a focus is also a good thing and it can help boost that part of town. No, I don't think the 'Tesco' junction is sensible as I believe-along with many others, that it will cause traffic chaos there - you're probably old enough to remember the circular queues of traffic around the old Sainsburys in Eastover. Extra supermarkets (if needed at all) of that size should be out of town and the shops in the town supported and the environment re-shaped to support them. Anyway, I just write because you said i;m not a driver-which isn't true (someone also suggested i was an alcoholic in a previous post-also not true) (for the time being).
However, I do not share your opinion re as you put it refocusing the Town Centre on the River Frontage, if we had a fresh water fast flowing River, with enchanting vista's I would agree.
But what in reality we have is a muddy River, that has little appeal. To try to encourage a ' Al Fresco' atmosphere is somewhat stretched, I do not share Cllr Ann Fraisers, Vision for the River Parrett, just ask any resident of the Town as to what they think of the 'Rope Linkage' from Sainsburys along the River towards the Town Bridge.
To attempt to have A Riverside Cafe Culture, as it is, will only encourage more Squawking Gulls, and pigeons to swoop and crap over diners brave enough to endure the bombardment, as they swoop to nick the food of your plates.
It was yourself and Cllr Kathy Pearce who have carried this pedestrianisation
Of West Quay, and Highway Closure.
My Conservative Ex Collegues may well be supporting the regeneration of Eastover, but that does 'nt mean they support all the aspects.
I was saw in the background support papers re :WestQuay Closure, was instigated by yourself, Cllr Kathy Pearce, and Cllr Harvey Siggs SCC.
I'm all in favour of seeing Eastover raise from the Pheonix , so to speak, but where the regeneration monies come from for the project worries me, as to how and who will be able to finance such a scheme.
Eastover properties are in many individual ownership, with the exception of one major land owner, who may or may not invest further into Bridgwaters Eastover retail sector.
I have said that the Post Office could be a good thing , if PO Counters decide to relocate from the Portacabin to it, but the Consultation will tell, in six weeks, myself personally I have heard their promises too many times over the last 5 years. They will only do what they want!!. If they deliver, as I've said it would be good for all concerned. We can only wait and see!!!!!

David it's probably irrelevant that you don't think i;m a driver because you've never seen me drive. I'll similarly assume you're not a paratrooper. In respect of west quay, the residents came to me and Kathy as their councillors asking whether pedestrianisation was possible and we responded to that It was an ideal opportunity as the wall was being fixed so it could be done as part of that. As i said, the support was about 5.1 in favour. we don't sit on the River Danube and we can't change that, but we can make the best of what we have and frankly the view along West Quay on a sunny day (if you remember them) can be pretty good. And 1,000 years ago someone thought it a pleasant enough spot to build a town on it. Towns shouldn't turn their backs on their rivers, it's a waste of the very thing that created them in the first place. It is Bridg-water after all...
Petition, of less than 600, have instigated this road closure Order. Thus depriving many residents from alternative ways of getting around our Town.
I believe this to be foolhardy, in its instigation, without finding out as to how detrimental this Road closure will bring, in the short term, and indeed the future.

Convert the 1 or 2 shops on the ground floor, to make another right of way from Asda - to Eastover, New Rd is scheduled to be Pedestrianised, if Cllr Smedley and the Eastover Death- Nell of Eastover regeneration, or not have their way, anyone who wants to restrict traffic to and around Eastover, does not realise the impact on revenue that this will be detrimental to retailers takings, therefore their businesses will not be viable.
