Public consulted on flooding for meeting

A PUBLIC consultation on flooding begins next week - in preparation for a massive 'flood summit' in March.

Around 500 officials are expected to meet at Taunton County Cricket Ground on March 15 to assess the impact of flooding, which continues to devastate the county.

Among them will be senior representatives from the Environment Agency, DEFRA, NFU, insurance companies, MPs, councils, drainage board, water board, emergency services, highways and more.

The meeting will be invite only, but the public will receive forms this week asking them to indicate localised flooding issues and suggest actions to take.

Nick Plumley, strategy development and change manager for Sedgemoor District Council, said: “People are extremely cross and upset about problems caused by flooding, but the decision was taken not to have direct verbal engagement with the public.

“Instead we want them to submit forms detailing issues specific to their area, in order to avoid repetition. Also many people will be at work during the meeting so this is the most practical way we can achieve a good quality outcome.”

Opportunities will be explored from a national to parish level. Parish councils for areas such as Brent Knoll and villages affected by flooding of the Rivers Axe and Brue will also be contacted to attend the meeting.

Mr Plumley added: “The EA is already funding millions on flooding issues. A substantial investment is needed.

“By working with senior representatives we hope to create a strong voice to campaign for a government investment.”

After the meeting, information will be taken to local scrutiny committees, which the public can attend.
