Short-stay school to be built by Bridgwater Hospital

A UNIT for around 100 children struggling at mainstream schools in Sedgemoor could open next to the new Bridgwater Hospital.

Somerset County Council has announced plans for an Integrated Pupil Referral Unit on fields it owns off Bower Lane.

PRUs are short-stay schools with huge staffing resources for children who cannot cope with mainstream schools for a variety of reasons, ranging from behavioural difficulties to medical problems.

PRUs provide a safe environment for children to help get them back into mainstream school as soon as possible.

If the integrated PRU goes ahead, it would mean the closure of three smaller PRUs in Bridgwater, in Westonzoyland Road, Albert Street and Sydenham, which together take 97 pupils.

The county council has allocated £1.75million to build the centre, which could be funded by the sale of the Albert Street PRU and its share of the Northgate site.

It says Bridgwater’s existing PRUs are no longer fit for purpose.

Cllr Frances Nicholson, cabinet member for children and families, told the Mercury: “The advantage of having an integrated PRU is that children end up in a better, more purpose-built site.

“They will end up, I think, with much greater support. Even though they will be in one unit, they will still be working in very small groups.”

Cllr Nicholson said the new unit is still dependent on a cash settlement from central Government.

I did say @ the time that we Approved the Planning Consent for the New Hospital, as there was no planning grounds to refuse, not that I would have voted against, as I believed then and still do that this Hospital is & was very much needed for Bridgwater, this Site was the only site feasible and possible.
That land purchase, was from a Private Farmer Owner, however in this being effected, on land adjoining Motorway and Bower Lane.
This, then opens up SCC to use their landholdings, ie, farmland for Developement now alongside.
I wonder if A private land owner was to apply to develope land adjoining the Motorway Bund, which was always along Bower & Dunwear Lane. Bridgwater. So does this now mean that Bower Lane Residents, who were Bridgwater Without Electoral Ward Residents, became under the Westonzoyland Ward, after the last Elections. Now can expect the total development of land, owned by SCC to be developed, GreenField Land, not Brownfield redevelopment Sites that should be developed in the First instance.
Am awaiting, with baited Breathe!!
