HUNDREDS of eager boaters flocked to Durleigh reservoir to soak up the glorious summer sun and enjoy a free sail courtesy of the Durleigh Sailing Club's annual open day.

Now in its 11th year, the popular event attracted over 800 adults and children to enjoy the wonderful experience of briskly floating along the reservoir.

Enthusiastic crowds were able to receive food and drinks throughout and enjoyed tea, coffee, bacon rolls, cakes, ice creams and, the summer favourite, BBQ food.

Youngsters on shore were kept entertained by taking part in a quiz and an organised treasure hunt while they waited for their turn on the water.

Sailing club member and Somerset Youth and Community Sailing Association chairman Pete Branson said: "The whole day went extremely well and I would say it was one of the best events we've ever held.

"The weather played its part in attracting so many people but the added attraction of a free sail really added to the day's success.

"Following the day, the club has attracted new members and the sailing training centre has already had people interested in signing up for courses.

"The only downside to the day was, due to the immense popularity, at one stage people were waiting for an hour for their free sail, but there was more than enough to keep them occupied during their wait.

"We are now looking forward to next year's event and hope to see old and new faces.

"The club also appreciates the amount of coverage the local press has given to us to make this day as successful as possible."
