Big bucks from fundraising family

A DEDICATED family from Bridgwater has raised a staggering £250,000 for charity after 20 years of fundraising.

Terry, Alyson, Vicky and Beccy Roberts began their quest to raise money for Cancer Research UK after Terry's first wife, Lorna, died of cancer at the age of 43.

Now in their 20th year of fundraising, they have raised more than a quarter of a million pounds for the charity - an amazing £50,000 of that in one year.

Alyson said: "When we first started to raise money, we never thought we would reach such a large figure.

"It all began with a couple of skittles evenings and a fete on the Quantocks that got rained off, then we moved onto organising balls."

The Roberts' have also held successful auctions to raise money, and have had support from many other people.

Andrew Jeanes, Nick Pardoe and Tim Manning from Inwood Farm, Nether Stowey, organised a hugely successful Mid Summer Masked Ball and raised £10,000.

Zoe Cook from Taunton also organised two events at her home raising a further £5,000, which helped make up the grand total of £50,000 raised during the Roberts' twentieth year.

Terry and Alyson have now decided to "retire" from the frontline of fundraising activities, but their daughters will continue to organise balls and carry on the family's good work.

Dawn Harrison, Cancer Research UK's Somerset volunteer manager, said: "The Roberts family are truly remarkable - to continue to raise funds for 20 years is indeed an achievement in its own right, but to raise £250,000 for Cancer Research UK along the way, takes a very special form of commitment.

"Cancer Research UK can't thank Terry, Alyson, Beccy and Vicky enough for everything they have done for the charity over the years."
