THE history of the Coleridge family will be delved into through at talk at Nether Stowey Village Hall today.
The Nether Stowey Arts Evening presents the talk Coleridge and his Daugher Sara: A Life Apart but a Communion of Minds, delivered by Shirley Watters.
While thousands of people visit Coleridge Cottage in the Somerset village to learn about the well-known writer, less is known of his talented daughter Sara.
Born in Keswick in 1802, she wrote the romantic fairy story Phantasmion and helped her brother Derwent to edit her father's poems - one of which is in her own handwriting in Coleridge Cottage.
Her fate was to be a highly intelligent woman in a climate in which women were not expected to be academic.
In fact, an intellectual woman's worst critics were likely to be other women, and Sara Hutchinson, Wordsworth's sister-in-law, thought that she was “somewhat spoilt by so much learning”.
The event starts at 7.30pm. Entry is £2.50 and includes a glass of wine or juice.
