A BRAND new extension has been added to the Engine Room in Bridgwater.

It means the community media centre in the High Street will have an extra two floors for exhibitions and other events.

The Engine Room, which opened in 2003, is managed by the charity Somerset Film, and is dedicated to empowering people and communities through film and digital media.

The extension involved a major revamp of a redundant building next door.

A spokesman for Somerset Film said: "As well as providing more space to deliver more activities our ambition is to transform the Engine Room into a playable building, a space that will gradually fill with artifacts and activities that inspire, inform and engage the imagination."

Local artists Sue Webber and Steve Clarke have collaborated with Ignite, a Somerset Film initiative to stage the first exhibition in the new space.

Bridgwater Town Mayor Elect Alex Glassford, Councillor Liz Leavy and local animator Barnaby Dixon will formally open the building on Friday, May 20.
