GET ready for a feast of entertainment with the Bridgwater and District Choral Society on Saturday, December 6, at 7.30pm.

The society’s Christmas concert at St Mary’s Church, Bridgwater, is an evening of attractive, melodious pieces not to be missed.

Britten’s ‘A Ceremony of Carols’ re-interprets the spirit of a traditional Christmas for a modern age. His innovative settings of English carols ranges from the boisterous ‘Wolcum Yole!’ to the tender ‘There is no rose’.

As the last hushed alleluia floats down the beautiful aisles of St Mary’s, we guarantee you’ll feel that wonderful shiver of anticipation that means Christmas is coming.

The concert, conducted by Iain Cooper, starts with Elgar’s ‘Scenes from the Bavarian Highlands’.

Written in the style of Bavarian folk music, these charming, tuneful songs transport you to the bracing air of the Alps.

Dancing and love songs contrast with a lullaby and a depiction of falling snow, and the piece ends with a triumphant hunting song.

From ice and snow you travel to the heat of the deep South, and a different tradition – spirituals.

In Rutter’s ‘Feel the Spirit’ you’ll hear sensitive arrangements of old favourites, from the sombre ‘Steal away’ and ‘Deep river’ to the stirring ‘Joshua fit the battle of Jericho’ and ‘When the saints’.

Tickets cost £12/8 and are available from www.ticketsource.co.uk or on the door.
