A PROLIFIC singer-songwriter with arguably the silkiest voice in pop comes to Yeovil’s Octagon this January.

In his five-decade career, Paul Carrack has played with Mike + the Mechanics, Squeeze and Roxy Music, providing lead vocals on hits ‘Tempted’, ‘Over My Shoulder’ and ‘The Living Years’.

On Friday, January 24, he will perform his greatest hits and songs from his latest record, the soul-infused Rain or Shine, after touring with Eric Clapton.

The musical polymath said: “I’m 62 now, and as a musician and vocalist I think I’m as good as I’ve ever been. You’re always in search of doing that great album, and I’m pleased I’ve been able to capture some of the best vocal performances that I’ve had – it’s just onwards and upwards.”

The influence of Ray Charles, as an idol of Carrack’s, is clear, cemented by his covering three of the great artist’s tracks.

Carrack said: “Charles was a genius, no doubt about it. I grew up listening to him. I just love the way he puts his own stamp on whatever song he sings, yet I wouldn’t narrow down my influences to Charles either as I’ve stolen from everybody – Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder – I’m a big fan of soul.”

Carrack has also written for The Eagles, Diana Ross, Tom Jones, Michael McDonald and Jools Holland, and appeared on over 60 albums, including session work for The Smiths.
