SATIRICAL Moorlych artist Nancy Farmer has been picked as one of 23 winners in a national decorative deckchair design competition.
More than 180 deckchair designs were submitted to Clevedon Pier volunteers in the spring, together with pieces by a clutch of celebrities – including Gyles Brandreth, Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park, and The Stranglers – which are soon to be auctioned off to raise funds for the pier’s charity.
The judging panel of five had their work cut out but were taken by Nancy’s gouache paint design series of sunbathing, bookreading mermaids reclining on traditional seaside deckchairs.
“The paintings embody Nancy Farmer’s approach to her subject matter – a mixture of fantasy and reality, tongue-in-cheek mirroring of the real world with a collection of other-worldly characters drawn from mythology and her imagination,” says volunteer Jonquil Brooks.
Nancy’s chair is currently being exhibited in a free winners’ exhibition at the Tollhouse Gallery Clevedon Pier in North Somerset – opening times are 10am-5pm Monday to Friday and 10am-6pm Saturday and Sunday.
