AWARD-WINNING Scottish folk singer Emily Smith will perform at Wiveliscombe Congregational Church as part of a short run of shows in England.
She won BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Traditional Musician of the Year in 2002 and gained two nominations at last year’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards for Folk Singer of the Year and Best Traditional Track for her song Sweet Lover of Mine.
Her most recent album, Traveller’s Joy, is a collection of traditional and self- penned songs inspired by her travels throughout the world.
Covers include a stripped back piano and vocal version of Richard Thompson’s Waltzing’s For Dreamers and Somewhere Along the Road by Rick Kemp.
Emily’s husband, Jamie McClennan, produces her albums and has become an integral part of her sound, playing fiddle and guitar in her band, which is completed by Matheu Watson on guitar and whistle.
Emily also plays piano and accordion and has performed at many of the world’s biggest folk festivals, including Cambridge Folk Festival, Glasgow’s Celtic Connections, Denmark’s Tonder Folk Festival and the National Folk Festival in Australia.
The Guardian said she is “surely the most impressive young instrumentalist and songwriter singing in English.”
Tickets to the concert at the church in Silver Street, Wiveliscombe, on Monday, February 18, cost £10-£12 and the show starts at 8pm.
