Formula 1 star Daniel Ricciardo is to take on some of the all-time racing greats – by tackling the star in a reasonably priced car challenge on Top Gear.

The Red Bull team driver – who finished third in the 2014 Drivers’ World Championship – will take to the show’s track at Dunsford in Surrey for the third episode of the series.

Australian Ricciardo, 25, will be aiming to top the F1 drivers’ leader board on the BBC Two show, which is currently led by Lewis Hamilton with a record time he set two years ago.

Other major names from the professional driving circuit who have taken the challenge include Damon Hill, Rubens Barrichello, Nigel Mansell and Sebastian Vettel.

The programme has a separate leader board for F1 stars, who have all competed in a Suzuki Liana, while the celebrity contestants have used a number of different models over the years.

The new series of the BBC Two show kicked off on Sunday with non-driver Ed Sheeran bravely taking a spin on the track to experience his first time behind the wheel.

After a practice lap which saw him churning up mud after leaving the tarmac, he went on to complete his circuit proper in a time which was 0.2 seconds faster than comedian Jack Whitehall.

Other stars who have been lined up for this series include Kiefer Sutherland, due to be screened this Sunday, and Will Smith who is earmarked for February 15.
