Hip hop trio Young Fathers tonight won one of UK music’s most prestigious awards as they collected the Barclaycard Mercury Prize for their album Dead.
Young Fathers’ offering beat 11 other nominated albums – including records from Damon Albarn, Bombay Bicycle Club and bookmakers’ favourite FKA Twigs.
DJ Nick Grimshaw revealed the winner of the £20,000 prize at London’s Roundhouse venue, in Camden.
Alloysious Massaquoi, ‘G’ Hastings and Kayus Bankole formed their band in 2008 and recorded their first album, Inconceivable Child… Conceived, with producer Timothy London soon after.
In a brief acceptance speech, Massaquoi said simply: “Thank you, we love you, we love you all.”
The results brought mixed reactions from music lovers across the country.
