Tom Hardy has revealed that finding his singing voice has been a challenge.

The Child 44 star is to portray Sir Elton John in the upcoming biopic Rocketman, where he is expected to belt out a tune or two.

“I’m not a singer. I had a crack at it because obviously Elton John’s film is in the pipeline so I have a go and open my mouth in that way,” Tom said.

“I’m not really into singing or musicals. I rapped but that was when I was a kid. Now I’m 37 and someone’s dad.”

Tom added: “There’s no shoot date yet.”

The 37-year-old actor, who next stars in Mad Max: Fury Road, admitted he doesn’t read scripts before he signs on for roles.

“I don’t (read scripts). People will tell me about them and if I get interested in them then we have a conversation,” he said.

“It sounds like I don’t care but I actually do. Things form in a different way for me. People will say, ‘Look, this director is awesome’, these are the actors who are involved, this is the character, this is the world and then I’ve got the story already.

“I don’t really need to read a script more than once unless I’m learning the lines for the day or if it’s Shakespeare or restoration comedy.”

Tom next plays “Mad” Max Rockatansky in Mad Max: Fury Road, the fourth film in the franchise which comes 30 years after 1985′s Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.

The movie, which also stars Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult, is set to premiere on May 14 at the Cannes Film Festival.

“I’m really excited to get to Cannes and set it up,” the actor said.

“It’s a huge George Miller product, he’s spent the best part of 30 years making it and finally to be allowed to release it and release his mind on the public as it were in full HD and hundreds of millions of dollars of graphics…”

Tom also revealed he will be in line to watch the new Star Wars film, The Force Awakens.

“Absolutely. I saw the trailer for it and me and the lads were sat there and got really excited about it. I grew up with that so I am (a fan),” he said.
