Lena Dunham’s award-winning comedy Girls is bursting back on to our screens on Monday and we can’t wait to catch up with what everyone’s been up to. Last we knew Lena’s character Hannah Horvath had been accepted on to a writing programme in Iowa and was leaving NYC to take up the opportunity.

1. We’re still crushing on Lena Dunham.

We don’t know if it’s Lena or Hannah we most want to be friends with, but there’s no doubting Lena is winning at life: she’s only 28 and no where near the top of her game yet. Jealous? A little. Fascinated? Absolutely.

2. We love the foursome of Hannah, Marnie, Jessa and Shoshanna.

In the past we’ve had Monica, Rachel, and Phoebe, then Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda. These four will be around with us forever and we’re more than OK with that.

3. It’s an insight into Lena’s life too.

This tweet might be from Lena, but it’s soooo Hannah.

The character might be called Hannah, but deep down we know that nuggets of Hannah’s character came from Lena’s life. We know this because we have now read/watched Lena’s lifestory in Tiny Furniture, her break-out film; Not That Kind Of Girl, her first book and collection of autobiographical stories; and, of course, Girls itself.

4. It might be a US TV show, but there’s a British sense of honesty.

Seriously, if this show was made in the UK it would be tagged as gritty British drama. On the face of it, 20-somethings in NYC sounds like a glamorous setting, but the characters are finding life tough: it’s not that easy to get the perfect job, have perfect sex, or have perfect relationships – be that with guys, their parents, their bosses, or even each other.

5. We’ll get to see Shoshanna Shapiro try to make it in the real world.

Cocooned/protected by her university life, uptight Shoshanna has now graduated. Is she still on track with her very specific plan for life? Certainly the trailer for S4 makes it look likes she finding it harder than expected. And then there’s Ray.

6. Will Marnie’s singing ambitions be realised.

When we first met Marnie, we thought she was flawless and the polar opposite of struggling Hannah. She had the clean-living boyfriend, a paying and steady job, and great hair. But over the last three series we’ve seen her change as she broke up with Charlie (twice), changed jobs a couple of times, made questionable bed buddy choices and confessed her singing ambitions. OK, so the YouTube video of What I Am didn’t go down that great in the show, but she really can sing as her open mic night towards the end of last season proved. What’s going to happen?

7. What’s happening with Marnie and Ray.

Alex Karpovsky will always be Ray to us (Clint Spaulding/AP/PA)

Marnie seemed disgusted with herself that she was with Ray, the coffee shop manager and Shoshanna’s ex, but yet she kept going back. What’s happening? Any excuse to keep Ray in the show is fine by us. He provides a great alternative view to the Girls, who often seem to be on a self-destruct setting. There’s just the one clip of him in the trailer, with Shoshanna. Oooo.

8. We need to know how the Iowa issue will work.

Lena Dunham and Adam Driver as Hannah and Adam in Girls
Will there be less screen time for carpenter/actor Adam with the show’s main character and his gf now in Iowa? (Landov/PA)

Hannah’s now in a writing programme in Iowa but the rest of the Girls – plus Ray and Adam – are still in NYC. How’s it going to work with the central cast member being in a completely different location?

These are things we need to know. Even the trailer starts with Hannah Skyping Marnie. “No-one is moving to Iowa, ever,” says Marnie. No? Then how will the show work???

Btw, that song, in the trailer is I Believe (Get Over Yourself) by Nico Vega.

Girls screens on Sky Atlantic on Monday at 10pm; the first three series are currently available on Sky Catch Up.
