Internet Killed the Reality Star

What were you doing in life before 1983? As you work out how old you were, where you were, what you were doing and with whom, one thing is certain, you were doing it all without using the internet. Before 1983, we took photos in to the printers to be developed, we listened to music on our stereo, and we actually spoke to people instead of emailing, and actually went to high street shops to buy things. We even went to several different travel agents to find the best price for our holidays in the Costa Almeria. These days everything is available to us at the touch of a button and we don't even need to leave the arm chair let alone the house. But look at the effect this is having on society. Many businesses rely on paying customers coming through their doors and surely the internet will slowly but surely kill these companies off.

DVD rental shops.

If we don't have to go out, most of us won't so we join internet sites that post us DVD's to watch at our leisure, then post back to them at our convenience, it's so easy. You can also order the accompanying pizza on the internet.

Record shops.

We can listen to our favourite bands on the internet without having to buy their CD's. We can then download their music, send it to our phones and share it with our friends. And none of this music takes up any space in our 'real' lives.

Printers.

Can you remember the days when we had to finish the film in our camera, take it all the way to the printers, wait days for it to be developed and then go all the way back to collect it? We then faced the huge disappointment as we realised we'd chopped people's heads off, over exposed the film or simply got our thumb in the way of the viewfinder. We don't even have to own a camera now; we can take photos on our mobile phones, upload them to our computers and then print them off ourselves...easy.

Mapmakers.

Do we still need those huge paper maps that no-one can ever fold? No, these days we just go online and print off a map and directions specific to our journey, and as an added bonus we can even be alerted to where the road works and speed cameras are.

Travel Agents.

It's nice to go into the shop and look through brochures with the assistant guiding us. Well we can do that at home now. We are able to compare prices, research destinations and read other travellers reviews before we book, without even leaving the house. Flights to New York, family holidays in Costa Almeria, stag weekends in Amsterdam or Cub 18-30 in Ibiza, everything you need at the touch of a button.

So as you proceed to your internet checkout to purchase your goods, spare a thought for the poor assistant waiting in a real shop that would wrap your goods and take your payment with a friendly smile and pleasant banter, now you'll never get that personal touch on the internet will you?
