Reduced Capacity Threatens Long Haul Tourism

The travel industry has announced shortages in long haul flight capacity to some of its most popular destinations over the Easter holidays.

Flights to the Indian Ocean, the Caribbean, cheap Luxor holidays and Florida have almost sold out for over the Easter holidays, although there is some premium seats left which most people looking for cheap holidays abroad simply cannot afford. There is plenty of hotel capacity available, just not the flights to actually get you there.

The shortage of seats available has occurred after tour operators cut capacity due to the global recession causing lack of demand. Major operators TUI and Thomas Cook have both reduced seat numbers while the collapse of XL and Globespan have had a dramatic impact on bookings.

The director of Visit Florida, Colin Brodie admitted the loss of charter capacity had been a severe blow, "We have lost charter capacity - XL used to have eight or nine flights a week and the big UK operators such as TUI and Thomas Cook are reducing seats to Florida. We have also lost Globespan."

Flights to Tenerife are also quite scarce over Easter as the Canary Islands prove to be as popular as ever.

Egypt is once again proving to be a fashionable winter destination and holidays to Sharm el Sheikh are selling fast, however there is still availability on cheap Luxor holidays, Nile cruises and family holidays to Taba. There is also availability to Far East destinations such as Malaysia and Thailand. If you want to go abroad this Easter, tour operators are warning people to book now. Leaving it until the last minute in the hope that they will get a bargain is simply not going to happen this year.

Many people are fed up following the excessive cold spell that the UK has experienced this winter, added to that the fact that many of us missed last years holiday due to the recession could be why seats are selling out for the forthcoming Easter holidays.
