NOSTALGIC scenes from the Taunton, Wellington and West Somerset area are among those captured in a new book.

The Last Days of Steam in Bristol and Somerset, by Colin G. Maggs, brings together a superb collection of images that retell the story of the end of steam traction in the area.

Although diesel locomotives were introduced to Somerset’s railways as early as 1958, it was not until 1966, and the closure of the Somerset and Dorset Railway, that steam finally disappeared from the county.

The volume depicts a wide variety of locomotive power, including standard GWR and BR classes, as well as MR and LMS types.

Maggs, of Bath, has written more than 60 books on railways and in 1993 was awarded the MBE for services to railway history.
