YOUNG people in Somerset who get a kick out of helping people within the community should apply for an apprenticeship in social care, it has been claimed.
Care services minister Phil Hope says a health and social care apprenticeship allows candidates to experience first hand the rewards of working with and caring for vulnerable people.
It provides practical, on the job experience while working towards recognised qualifications and being paid at the same time.
The call comes as the Minister published a new Adult Social Care Workforce Strategy to lure new workers, including experienced managers and leaders from the private sector, to help care for some of the most vulnerable people in society.
He also announced a new £75m scheme to fund CareFirst, a new traineeship programme to encourage 50,000 more unemployed young people into social care.
Mr Hope said: “The social care apprenticeship scheme is a great step on the career ladder for young people who want to gain real life experience of the care sector.
“The opportunity to gain relevant job knowledge and recognised qualifications, whilst earning a salary means that young people have every chance of forging a rewarding career in social care.”
Each trainee is assigned a mentor who will guide candidates through their apprenticeship, tailoring training requirements according to each individuals needs.
This support will help to ensure that individuals can progress as quickly as they want to, whilst arming them with the skills and knowledge they require to take up roles within social care in the future.
There are two types of apprenticeship scheme; the young apprenticeship scheme aimed at young people under the age of 16, and the Health and Social Care apprenticeship aimed at candidates over the age of 16.
