MORE than 40 works by Czech Expressionist Ernest Neuschul sold out at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s recent specialist sale, which totalled £54,850.

Many of the paintings went for four figure sums at The Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton, in the rare “white glove sale” – the term auctioneers give to a sell-out auction. The lot average was a robust £1,300. Bridgwater Mercury: SIGNED: Odalisken signed EN sold for £2,100 to a phone bidder

There was an enormous appetite for the 41 works by the artist with buyers online from the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany and the US.

A number of the lots went to private individuals, while a Czech art gallery and museum were also interested in the works and sent a representative to the saleroom.

The top lot, which also adorned the front of the catalogue was ‘Der Maler und sein Werk’ – the artist and his creation. An online bidder bought this for £3,200. Another online bidder bought ‘Die singende Lautenspielerin – Singing lutenist for £2,000. Bridgwater Mercury: TOP LOT:‘Der Maler und sein Werk’ – The Artist and his Creation sold to an online bidder for £3,200 at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s specialist sale

The paintings had all come from the family of Ernest Neuschul, who were delighted with the success of the sale.

Auctioneer Peter Rixon, who conducted the sale, said: “ The collection has been appreciated in the broadest sense. We had a good variety of buyers -– local, national and international.”

A family spokesman said: “We were absolutely delighted with GTH's sale of family paintings. From his first visit I realised that Peter (Rixon) had an eye for artefacts of every kind, a deep appreciation of their history and a genuine enjoyment of the human stories behind every cache in an attic. Bridgwater Mercury: UNIQUE: Singing Lutenist went for £2,000 to an online buyer
