AUCTIONEERS Greenslade Taylor Hunt will celebrate the design of the 20th Century with a substantial section of items from the era in the next sale which takes place on Thursday, July 6.

The sale at The Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton, will feature the regular lots associated with the monthly event such as jewellery and silverware, but it will also showcase an enormous range of items from the 20th Century.

This section of the sale has been put together by specialist Simon Rayner, who is a keen devotee of the era and was responsible for a similar successful event earlier in the year.

Among the items on offer are a dining table and chairs dating from the 1950s by Danish designer Hans Wegner. His high quality design earned him an international reputation.

Wegner said of his work “I have always wanted to make unexceptional things of an exceptionally high quality.”

The table and chairs, which have been owned by the vendor’s parents from new, are guided at £300-£500.

A Scandinavian sofa with a wooden frame is among a large section of furniture from the 20th Century.

English brands G Plan and Ercol are also well represented with early examples from both furniture makers. There are a number of light coloured examples of the iconic Ercol furniture. Among the items included is a limited edition side table with a plaque signed by Lucian Ercolani himself. This would have been specially commissioned. Other Ercol highlights include a dining table and six chairs, a small sideboard and a pair of Windsor chairs.

There is plenty of glassware with items from Italy and throughout Europe. Also featured is a large collection of ceramics that belonged to an architect and keen amateur potter. Built up over a lifetime the set includes some striking examples from the last century.
