Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a massive entry saw a flying trade, when several new purchasers were around the ring secure in the knowledge that with such a large entry they would have plenty of choice. 2nd quality cows and heifers either giving not enough milk or too old were much more difficult to place as winter housing is imminent.

A much larger entry of cows, when quality was a little lacking, saw a top of £1680 for a “Leswidden” cow from Ham Farm Partners. Others £1660 and £1530 for Mr R Puddy & Son’s dispersal; £1620 Snook Ltd; £1550 Messrs S Dann & Son Norfolk. Montbeliarde cow £1360 J Snook Ltd.

A good run of incalf heifers attracted more demand to £1400 and £1390 for first time consignor Messrs GA & RT Bosley, Wantage, Oxford. Others £1400 and £1320 Andy Neill Farm Services; £1310 Mr RM Templeman, who had bulling heifers £720 x3 and yearlings to £560 x2 and calves to £270.

Other commercial calves more difficult to sell to £300 for a British Friesian, 15 day old calf from Mr DA Coombes.

Trade for the better cattle is still good but the better cattle are now fewer in number. Otherwise very up and down to reflect those on offer.

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report numbers continue to rise and another good end of September entry, again up on the equivalent market last year, sold to a good trade from start to finish. Typically for the time of year an increase in the number of suckler bred stirks forward, which attracted very strong interest and some excellent prices were achieved.

Top price of £895 (15m) for a Limousin steer from Messrs P & G McCotter, who also sold another at £815 (15m). Sheep (4303): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report the following sheep trades: Store Lambs (2358): A large entry of 2358 store lambs sold to a firmer trade for all presented. The best topped at £110 for a pen of ram lambs from Mr EJ Gwyn. Others to £85 from Mr G Busk; £82 from Messrs AS Poultney & Sons; £79 and £71.50 from Mr P Athay; £75.50 and £73.50 from Mr P Webber; £72 from Mr CM Finlay and Mr WA Jeans and £70 from Mr IJ Pincombe. Grazing Ewes & Rams (1272): A similarly large entry of 1272 grazing ewes and rams sold to a more difficult trade, although much better than anticipated following reports from other centres through the week. Ewes topped at £122 for a cracking pen from Messrs RC Burrough & Sons. Breeding Ewes (551): A good entry of 551 breeding ewes sold to a competitive trade from start to finish. Suffolk Mule shearlings to £118 (x2) from Mr MJ Headon and Messrs NF Clothier & Sons Ltd. Kerry Hill shearlings to £115 from Mr S Harris. 4T Suffolk Mules from Mr A Wellwood to £110.

Stock Rams (61): A large entry of 61 stock rams sold to a reasonable trade, when a good level of buyers were forward actively looking to source stock. Charollais at the fore and sold to £350 and £330 from Mr J Harding. Others of the same breed to £280 from Messrs NF Clothier & Sons Ltd. Texels topped at £225 again from Messrs Clothier. Older rams to £210 from Messrs DW & PA Retter.

Goats (61): A larger entry of 61 goats sold to a top of £98.50 from Haberfield Park Farm, when others sold to £90 from the same vendors and £91 from Mr M Beach. Overall average £45.26.

Pigs (152): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a reduced entry from our large consignment of 2 weeks ago. Trade very much on par, when fat pigs felt a touch stronger.

Cull Sows & Boars (19): Mixed entry when the best sold at £142 from Mr J Parry and £122 from Mr BS Newth. Medium weights between £70-90. Good competition throughout this section. Overall average Sows £88.60, Boars £99.47.

Weaners (17): Small entry when young coloured pigs sold to strong demand at £36 from Mr SR Horn.

Stores (111): Another first class entry sold to a level competitive trade. Top price was £122 from Mr PL Clark and £120 from Mr J Baker. Many pens between the £100 and £120 mark. Young stores £60-70. Overall average £65.59.

Breeding Pigs (5): 2 year old coloured sow £104 and 2 year old Boar £128 from Mr MJ Broome.
