Store Lambs (2085): Another large entry of 2085 store lambs sold at slightly lower levels for all presented. The best sold to £80.50 from Mr G Puddy. Grazing Ewes and Rams (1377): A similar very large entry of 1377 grazing ewes and rams sold to an overall slightly easier trade, when the best ewes saw the greatest drop, at a time when very large numbers of ewes have flooded into centres throughout the Country. Rams sold to £110 from Messrs AF & AH Powell. Others £100 from Mr M Naish; £95 from Messrs R & R Kirby; £91.50 from Mr DA Wood and £90 from MA Johnson Ltd. Ewes sold to £104.50 from P Coombs Ltd. Breeding Ewes (1762): A huge catalogued entry of 1762 breeding ewes and ewe lambs sold to a mixed trade. The very best continue to meet demand but buyers continue to be selective. North Country Mules in demand and sold to £126 from Dallyns Dairy Ltd, who sold others at £121 (x3) and £120 (x2). Other Mules to £124 from Mr MJ Headon. A cracking run of Texel Mules from Messrs JB Causey & Son sold to £125, £124 (X2) and £122. Suffolk Mules to £123 from Mrs T Phillips. Others of the same breed to £122 (x4) from Mr MJ Headon. Ewe lambs to £84 (x2) £82 (x2) and £80 for North Country Mules from Mr P Athay. Texel ewe lambs to £80 from Mr J Buckle.

Stock Rams (60): More forward this week sold to an improved trade. Top price this week went to Mr LAJ England who sold a cracking Charollais 2T ram to £380. An excellent run from Lutton Farms Ltd saw Dorset cross to £320 and Texels to £280. Mr B Gibbins had good Suffolk 2T which sold to £270. More again next week.

Goats (11): A small entry of overall good quality goats sold to £99.50 for strong nannies from Mr O Davies.

Steers sold to 210.5ppk for a very shapely red and very lean Limousin steer from Mr MW & Mrs S Edwards, Bristol, who sold another not quite so shapely at 204.5ppk. Good conformation and high yielding Limousin steers from Mr BA Sweet met calls of 210, 205.5, 205, 199.5 and 196ppk. Lean, younger Blonde bullocks from Mr DG Horler & Son, Bristol sold to feed at 205.5 and 201.5ppk. Well fleshed red Limousin at 201.5ppk from Mr J & Mrs S Vinnicombe & Son, Ottery St Mary. Strong pure Charolais at 200.5ppk twice from Mr G Vining, Axbridge.

Steers sold to £1,366.97 for one of the Charolais from Mr G Vining, when another achieved £1,365.30 from the same farm. 14 steers sold over £1300.

Heifers topped the day at 222.5ppk for a superb homebred Limousin from Mr GR Baker & Son, Cannington, who sold others at 201.5 and 200ppk. A good run from Mr PJ Hobbs, Bilbrook peaked at 210.5ppk for a Limousin, when Charolais achieved 198.5 and 197.5ppk. Smart Limousin at 207.5ppk from Mr AJ Paulley, Broadoak. Barley Blue at 198.5ppk from Mr SER Hunt, Kilve.

Montbeliarde at 132.5ppk also from Mr SR Curtis & Partners, who also sold a meat Holstein at 128.5ppk. 129.5ppk for a Holstein from Mr SJ & Mr RW Staples, Marshwood. Better steakers 120ppk plus. Plainer steakers 110 to 115ppk. Plain cows 90 to 90ppk but below if very plain. There were some very plain “shelly” types forward.
