Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a much larger entry was enhanced by calved dairy heifers and cows from Kent, Carmarthen, Glamorgan, Abergavenny (2 Vendors), Cheltenham, Gloucester, Swindon and St Austell, Cornwall. All were rewarded with another good trade for all types. On the day the best looked better value for money than medium quality types.

A non-pedigree calved heifer from Mr MC Powell topped the sale at £1850, when others sold to £1830 from Adrian Ractliffe; £1800 and £1700 from Messrs RJ Goss & Son, Devizes; £1800 and £1680 from Messrs AE & V Kidner, Chippenham; £1770 and £1700 from Messrs FG Summerhayes & Son; £1740 from Mr GP Cox; £1680 from Messrs PD & SA Godfrey and £1650 from Messrs RJ, HA & MR Popham. Jersey cross heifers to £1600 from Mr RH Webb. Smaller entry of cows saw a top of £1710 for a 2nd calver from Messrs Snook Ltd who sold another at £1410. Also £1380 from Mr GJ Reynolds of Kent. Shorthorn cow to £1220 from Messrs PW & JA Bevan & Son of Abergavenny.

Top price was £1375 (19m) for a superb Limousin steer from Messrs LE Sweetland & Son, Axminster, when a bunch of Charolais steers (19/23m) sold at £1290 from the same Vendor. Other good Charolais steers to £1245 x2 (26/27m) from Messrs MJ & DA Johnson, Membury. Top quality young types to £1202 (14m) from Mr A Janes, Puxton. Very strong trade for the excellent bunches of strong Angus steers on offer which topped at £1275 (22m) from Mr A Burland, Spaxton. Another good pen from Mr J Gardener sold at £1270 (20/23m). A trio from Mr RH Webb (24/26m) shot to £1265 and a pen from Messrs Parris, Taunton (23/29m) sold well at £1235. A cracking run of young suckler bred steers from Messrs SJ & DM Cowling lit the ring up, when his best (only 14m) sold at £1195 and other bunches at £1170, £1148, £1145 and £1090 (all 13/14m). Best Herefords to £1185 (16m) also Mr A Janes and £1150 (24m) also Mr D Marshall. Others to £1120 (23m) from Symes Partners, Misterton.

Marked improvement in the dairy bred trade when a massive 22m Holstein from Messrs MF & MV Attwell, Kingsdon topped at £1130. Another (27m) sold at £1060 from Messrs Burrough, West Buckland. Greenslade Taylor hunt report small entry of sucklers sold to £1480 for a 6 year old Hereford stock bull from Messrs IF Ford & Partners. Cows and calves to £1200 for a South Devon cow (07.15) and her Limousin cross heifer calf (18.06.17).

Show Potential Cattle: Greenslade Taylor Hunt report firstly thank you Vendors for an excellent entry of show potential cattle and to Mr L Cook for judging. Overall champion and 1st in Class 1 for the best unhaltered steer was a 7m Limousin at £1185 from Messrs DE & SJ Cheacker. Reserve Champion and 1st in the unhaltered steers was a 12m Limousin at £1210 from Messrs EA & DA Ellis. 2nd in Class 1 was a pretty Devon steer which made £590 from Mrs T David. 2nd in Class 2 for the best unhaltered steer was an 8m British Blue from Mr GS Brown which made £1030. 3rd was a British Blue from Messrs EA & DA Ellis at £1225. 1st in Class 4 for the best unhaltered heifer at £1190 was a British Blue (11m) from Messrs EA & DA Ellis, who also came 2nd in class with another at £1070. Mr GS Brown in 3rd with a lovely British Blue which made £1010.

Commercial: A respectable summer entry was met by a similar trade to last week. Top price £885 for a South Devon (12m) steer from Mr WHD Scott. Others to £870 (x3) for Limousins from Messrs J & S Creed & Doyle. £822 Limousin (11m) Mr TL Attwell. £795 Limousin (11m) from Mr J Sherwin. Charolais to £780 from Ham Farm Partners. AA to £775 from Mr BA Sampson. Shorthorns to £775 (7m) from Mr D Chipp, Lincoln to £775 (12m) from Messrs GFT, TJ & LJ Hooper. Simmentals £755 (10m) from Mr EA Coombes.

Store Lambs (1641): A larger entry of 1641 store lambs sold to a continuing strong trade, although more smaller and hill types meant the average was slightly back. Top price of £96.50 went to Mr S Marrison. Others to £94 from Mr S Williams; £86 from Mr JR Payne; £85.50 from Mr AM Tucker; £85 from Mr SE Davey and Messrs RE & EJ Parsons and £80.50 from Mr A Bowden. Mediums ranged £55-£70 and small types nearly all £30 plus. Overall average £59.01.

Grazing Ewes & Rams (1009): A slightly smaller entry of 1009 grazing ewes and rams sold to another strong, competitive trade with the best ewes to a top of £124 from Mr KA Pipe. Stock Rams (18): Modest entry of 18 breeding rams forward sold to a decent trade. A good run from Messrs NF Clothier & Sons saw the top price of £265 for a 2T Charollais. Others from the same farm sold to £235.

Goats (33): The best sold to £92 from Habberfield Park with an average of £55.81.

Top was 222.5ppk for a top drawer Limousin steer (606kg, 18m & FA) from Mr MJ Chilcott, Catcott. A run of smart suckler bred Limousin steers from Mr CRG Wall, Highbridge met calls of 215.5 (627kg) 215.5 again (588kg) 210.5 (581kg) 208.5 (597kg) and 206ppk (618kg). A shapely lightweight Blue (487kg) from Mr TE Harris, Clevedon rose to 209.5ppk. Further Blue steer (574kg) at 200.5ppk from Mr IM Passmore, Ilfracombe.

Native steers rose to 192.5ppk for a Devon from Mr NH Hasell & Son, Wellington.
