AUCTIONEERS Greenslade Taylor Hunt report an excellent trade, one of the best seen for commercial dairy cattle for two years, for the dispersal of the commercial herd of 277 Holstein Friesians for PJ White at Sedgemoor Auction Centre on Tuesday, May 16. The trade of the day was for the autumn calving cows and heifers with the top price of 1800gns achieved for a heifer due to her second in August sired by “De-Su Grover”. Other autumn calving heifers were sold to 1620gns twice, 1650gns and 1680gns twice. Cows sold to 1540gns for a freshly calved daughter of “Cervi Maxigoat”.

Heifer calves sold to 440gns for a daughter of “Laurelhill Classic” and 420gns for an “ABS Theory” daughter.

Incalf heifers due in June sold to 1280gns by “De-Su Grover” who also sired the top price served heifer at 1020gns. Maiden heifers sold to 640gns four times for daughter of “Classic, Theory and Tennyson”. Yearlings to 540gns for daughters of “ABS Theory” and “Woodmarsh Zoro”.

A packed ringside with buyers across the whole of the southwest as far as Cornwall to Sussex, Wiltshire and Dorset with 40 successful purchasers and many going away empty handed especially those in search of autumn milk. This created the day’s averages of:

Cows and Heifers in-milk (to include 24 calves at £300) £1335; (23 older, three quartered and high cell count cows at £627); In-calf Heifers £1159; Served Heifers/ Running with Bull £795; Maiden Heifers £481.
