Dairy Cattle (78): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a good entry sold to a super trade in front of a packed ringside. Despite low spring milk prices, the excellent barren cow trade and a shortage of calved cows and heifers has ensured that the good dairy trade is maintained.

Sedgemoor had both Vendors and Purchasers from Wales again this week.

A better show of heifers saw a top of £1800 for a “Leswidden” bred heifer by Tom Dauncey of Penzance, entered by Messrs FG Summerhayes & Son (a similarly bred heifer has been entered by the Vendors in our pedigree sale here on Tuesday 23rd May). Other heifers from the Summerhayes to £1780. The other leading heifer prices were £1720 from Mr RH Webb; £1700 from Mr DJ Cheacker; £1690 from Mr AP Ractliffe (both from Gloucester); £1600 from Mr PD Godfrey; £1570 and £1550 from Messrs MK Churchill & Son; £1560 from Messrs RL & ME Trott and £1540 from Messrs JR & CM Miller.

Only a sprinkling of cows to £1650 for a pedigree “Thameshead” 2nd calver from Messrs DG & IT Jones of Carmarthen. Others £1640 (4th) from Messrs GJ & FL Robertson from Gloucester and £1490 from Mr MC Powell.

Jersey heifer to £900 from Messrs TG & MG Wooff & Powell of Abergavenny, who had 2 incalf heifers to £1310 and £1060 for a Shorthorn heifer due in August, £1200 from Mr MW Hoskins and £1190 (Jersey cross) from Mr DR Dymond.

A large number of crossbred calves met a more selective trade to £130 x3 for Whitehouse Farms, Bruton.
