SPORT in all its guises was the focus for Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s specialist Spring Sporting Sale at The Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton.

This important fixture in the sales calendar attracts buyers and sellers from around the country and the world.

It is unique in dedicating itself to all matters sporting. Other auctioneers may offer a small smattering of sporting items in a sale, but Greenslade Taylor Hunt devotes two auctions annually to the sphere.

A comprehensive collection from a deceased Exmoor sporting estate sparked a good deal of pre-sale interest and this translated into some attractive prices on the day.

A Scottish stag’s head from the estate was snapped up by an internet bidder for £500, while a room bidder paid £400 for another Scottish stag’s head from the same source.

Continuing the country sports theme a collection of 12 equestrian and country sports related car badges caused a flurry of interest and sold to a room bidder for £600.

Snaffles is always a popular seller in the sporting sale and a watercolour signed and dated by the artist entitled Under Cover sold for £550.

A hand coloured print of Colonel Mordaunt’s Cock Match At Lucknow by Richard Earlom realised £400. The same figure was achieved for a study of a yellow Labrador “Judy” by Somerset artist Frances Mabel Hollams. Online bidders bought both pictures.

The internet dominated the tussle for a Beswick figure of a huntsman on a horse. Fierce competition resulted in a successful bid of £380 by one of the internet contenders.

An attractive double leather hat box inscribed R.J. Vernon, Kings Royal Rifles sold for a mighty £350, another leather double hat box went for £200.

A noteworthy £170 was achieved for an 1890s long red hunt coat in a distressed state. A gent’s scarlet evening tail coat with Tiverton Staghound Hunt buttons made £110, while a red hunt coat again with Tiverton Staghounds Hunt buttons sold for £140. Two pairs of gents brown leather field boots each sold for £140.

A bronze group of a whippet and a spaniel went for £300 and a bronze of a seated Pug sold for £220.

A limited edition of The Passing Seasons by Lionel Edwards along with 17 mounted colour plate illustrations signed by the author went to a room bidder for £280.

Motor racing memorabilia also proved a high point with a signed black and white press release photograph of Ayrton Senna with a montage of associated photographs fetching £380.
