BRIDGWATER Town Football Club were well represented at the funeral recently of Tom Wilson, who had served them as both player and manager.

The 72-year-old Scot, who lived at Alderney Road, Bridgwater, died suddenly on April 4. The funeral was at East Brent Parish Church, where there was a very big turn-out.

Mr Wilson, who played league football for both Reading and Exeter City, was a skilful inside-forward with Town in the late 1950s and early 1960s, when most of their team were ex-professionals straight out of the Football League.

He scored 45 goals in 159 games before moving on in 1963 to Street, where he became manager eventually. He returned to Town in 1975 and had two seasons as manager at their then ground, Castlefield.

After the original club had gone out of existence, he managed Bridgwater Town 1984's first team for a season in 1985-86 at Fairfax Park. He was also in charge of Watchet Town for a spell.

He was an electrician by trade, but worked as an insurance agent locally for many years before his retirement. He leaves a wife, two grown-up children and grandchildren
