D-Day for Northgate
 |
| The Sedgemoor Splash is included in the Northgate site. |
D-DAY is on the horizon for plans to completely revitalise a run-down part of Bridgwater.
Sedgemoor District Council's executive will consider two contrasting proposals for the long-awaited Northgate development on May 21.
The council is remaining tight-lipped on what is planned for Northgate, although some details will be revealed at a media briefing tomorrow (Wednesday).
As reported in the Mercury, the plans could see Sedgemoor Splash replaced with a new swimming pool, and new housing and retail units introduced.
The plans could also see Mount Street realigned to improve pedestrian access and a new decked car park built.
The scheme is a collaboration between Sedgemoor District Council, which owns 60% of the buildings and land on the site, and Somerset County Council, which owns most of the remaining 40%.
Council bosses are not giving details of how much the regeneration of Northgate might cost, but a figure of £70million was reported when the scheme was first proposed two years ago.
Polly Adams, Sedgemoor District Council's urban regeneration manager, said the proposals have been adapted since then to reflect market conditions.
She said: "We've done a lot of work over the last couple of years.
"There has been a delay in the project because the market has changed.
"We are now at the stage where we have two very different options we will be looking at."
The district council has stressed the plans it is about to consider will be subject to a major public consultation before any work begins.
The council says the press and public will be excluded from the Northgate part of the executive meeting on May 21 because of the confidential nature of the figures involved.
