Do your homework on used cars

PEOPLE in Bridgwater are being urged to do their research to avoid being ripped off when shopping for used cars.

Somerset County Council says since the issue of new registration plates in March, there has been a rush of second hand cars on the market as people upgrade their old vehicles.

But the council also warns that while used cars may look fine, many require costly repair work while some are not even roadworthy.

Jim Mochnacz, county councillor for community protection, said: "It is important consumers are cautious when buying a second hand car.

"By following the advice from Somerset County Council buyers can make sure they get good value for money when purchasing a second hand car.

"It will also ensure that Somerset roads and residents are safe."

The council advises people to: Check car magazines, prize guides and different dealers to see what is available in your price range and the value of any car you want to trade in Take somebody clued up about cars along with you to inspect a vehicle if you are not a motor expert - or pay for an independent inspection by a professional If buying from a dealer look for a trade association sign such as the Retail Motor Industry Federation.

Test drive any vehicle you are interested in buying As well as urging purchasers to be careful, Trading Standards officials promise to come down hard on people who sell vehicles that are not roadworthy.

Howard Burnett, Trading Standards manager, said: "The sale of vehicles that are unsafe will not be tolerated in Somerset.

"Somerset County Council works hard to monitor second hand car sales to make sure cars are safe and roadworthy."

Mr Burnett said a second hand car dealer was fined £2,000 in February after admitting supplying an un-roadworthy vehicle following an investigation by Somerset County Council and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency.
