Together with Somerset County Council and BBC Somerset, we’re launching a new awards scheme called Somerset Heroes, which aims to shine a light on those who make a real difference to our communities and make Somerset the wonderful place it is.
We want entries of all ages and from all walks of life.
A deserving winner could be somebody who has cared for a relative in challenging circumstances, an employee who has shown dedication and loyalty beyond the call of duty, a wholehearted sports coach who always goes the extra mile to get the best results or a teacher who inspires his or her students like no other.
We’re not going to tell you who we think should be nominated – we’re leaving it entirely up to you.
There will be medals and certificates for the winners, but the competition’s main aim is to give a well-deserved pat on the back to those ordinary people who do incredible things to make a difference to those around them.
Ken Bird, Editor-in-Chief of Newsquest Somerset, publishers of the Somerset County Gazette, Bridgwater Mercury, Chard and Ilminster News, Burnham and Highbridge Weekly News and Yeovil Express, said: “We know there are unsung heroes out there who deserve credit for what they achieve – let’s show them how much their efforts are appreciated.”
It couldn’t be easier to nominate somebody for a Somerset Heroes award.
Firstly, tell us about the nominee. Send us their full name and age, postal address and contact phone number(s).
Write up to 200 words detailing their accomplishments, explaining why they deserve a Somerset Heroes award.
Include your own name and contact details.
Send the details to newsdesk@countygazette.co.uk with the words ‘Somerset Heroes’ in the subject heading, or post them to
Somerset Heroes Awards
Somerset County Gazette
St James Street

You can also nominate someone using the on-line entry form.
Please notify the nominee (or their parents where appropriate) that you have put them forward.
Nominations must be received by Friday, May 6, and the awards ceremony is likely to take place in early June.
Look out for more details about the Somerset Heroes awards in future editions of the Newsquest Somerset newspapers.
