COMPLETING the Sedgemoor Carnival week, the spectacular and show stopping Highbridge and Burnham Carnival is taking place tonight (Monday).

Come the big night, tens of thousands of eager Carnival lovers will descend upon the town for a stunning array of colourful costumes and fancy floats.

Organisers are hoping for a similar success story to last year's event, which went smoothly - despite one or two last-minute appeals for help on the big night.

Committee chairman Mike Young, in the words of veteran television presenter Denis Norden, said he hoped the big show would be "alright on the night".

"We have put a couple of appeals in the paper looking for more marshals and collectors and so far it seems to be paying off, but we still need more," he said.

"So far so good though, we seem to be doing as well as were last year, which proved to be successful, and I'm really looking forward to it, although I am getting a bit old for it now.

"We are all praying for a dry and uneventful night, and hope people will give generously to help cover the rising costs year on year."

Carnival committee president Malcolm Borland told the Weekly News he was starting to get to the time of the year where the excitement really starts to build.

He said: "I am still heavily involved in a lot of the Carnivals in Somerset judging and lots of other things, but I am really starting to get excited about Burnham Carnival now.

"I am really looking forward to leading the procession and everything seems to be going really well and running smoothly so far.

"Obviously we could do with a few more volunteers to come forward as we always do, but the whole committee is feeling pretty confident this year will be a huge success."
