AMID all the excitement of Bridgwater Carnival, it can be easy to forget that it is just the first event of many.

Tonight (Saturday) the streets of North Petherton will be ablaze with light and awash with colour as the 2007 Carnival parade snakes its way around the town.

This year's two-mile parade takes features more than 130 entries, 70 of which are giant floats stretching up to 100 metres long.

The carnival contrasts all singing and dancing musical masterpieces with perfectly still tableaux as well as walking masquerades, pairs and groups.

As the anticipation builds, thousands of people are currently working feverishly behind the scenes to perfect this year's stunning spectacular.

While the last coat of paint is applied and the final few hundred light bulbs are screwed into place, the carts lie in their sheds - waiting to be unleashed on the streets.

Hundreds of performers are waiting in the wings, touching up their make up, zipping on their costumes and warming up their voices ready to make 2007 a memorable year.

The illuminated feast for the eyes and ears is exciting many, not least those on North Petherton's Carnival Committee.

Geoff Clifford, treasurer of the committee, said: "I can safely say it's going to be a great event this year. There are as many entries as last year and we are happy that works at the Rural Business Centre in Huntworth will not affect the route."

He also stressed the importance of the charity collections to the annual parade. All money given is voluntary but spectators are expected to give about £2 a head.

Geoff said: "We are hoping for a record collection as well, as with every year.

"Altogether we are praying for fine weather and hope that everyone has a wonderful night."
