May 8 meeting was with Wendy Darch, Parkinson's Disease Nurse from Musgrove Park Hospital, who was invited to come to talk to members about her work.
She explained that the disease is caused by a reduction of some chemicals in part of the brain and while there is yet no cure medication helps a great deal. Wendy holds clinics at Musgrove where she manages sufferer's medication and gives advice on using other services, such as physiotherapy and speech therapy. She also visits their homes, where she is able to see the family in its' own setting and give help and support.
It was interesting to hear that there are many specialist nurses for a variety of diseases, such as diabetes etc, who liaise with the consultants and give a professional, friendly service to their patients. There are services available on the NHS and through charities and nurses like Wendy can help sort these out.

It was a very interesting and relaxed afternoon and members were very grateful to Wendy for giving them some of her valuable time.
